Brilliant Green Agar

Description:
Brilliant Green Agar (BGA) is a selective and differential medium used for the isolation of Salmonella species (except S. Typhi) from clinical, food, water, and environmental samples. The brilliant green dye inhibits the growth of most Gram-positive bacteria and many Gram-negative organisms, allowing selective recovery of Salmonella.

Appearance:
Light green to dark green powder; when prepared, forms a green, solid agar medium.

Principle:

Brilliant green dye suppresses non-Salmonella organisms.
Lactose and sucrose act as fermentable carbohydrates.
Phenol red indicator (present in some formulations) differentiates Salmonella (red to pink colonies) from lactose/sucrose fermenters (yellow to green colonies).
