Micro Filtration Membranes and Syringe Filters
Micro filtration membranes and syringe filters are essential laboratory filtration products used for particle removal, sample clarification, and sterilization of liquids and gases in analytical, pharmaceutical, environmental, and research applications.
Description
Microfiltration membranes are thin, porous films designed to remove particles, microorganisms, and suspended solids, typically in the 0.1–10 µm range.
Common Membrane Materials
-
Cellulose Acetate (CA) – low protein binding, high flow rates
-
Mixed Cellulose Ester (MCE) – high bacterial retention, colony counting
-
Nylon (Polyamide) – compatible with aqueous and organic solvents
-
Polyethersulfone (PES) – high flow, low protein adsorption
-
PTFE – hydrophobic, ideal for aggressive solvents and gases
| Membrane Type | Description | Chemical Compatibility | Max. Operating Temperature | Sterilization Methods |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cellulose Acetate (CA) | Low protein-binding; well suited for sterile filtration and clarification of aqueous solutions, nutrient media, buffers, and sera. Provides superior chemical resistance to alcohols and oils. Hydrophilic with excellent flow rates. | Resistant to aqueous solutions, pH 4–8; resistant to most alcohols, oils, and other organic solvents | 180 °C | Autoclaving at 121 °C or 134 °C, dry heat, gamma radiation (25 kGy), ethylene oxide |
| Cellulose Nitrate / Mixed Cellulose Ester (MCE) | Primarily cellulose nitrate with a smaller percentage of cellulose acetate for improved stability. Effective bacterial retention, high flow rates, suitable for colony counting. | Resistant to aqueous solutions, pH 4–8; resistant to hydrocarbons and some solvents | 130 °C | Autoclaving at 121 °C, gamma radiation (25 kGy), ethylene oxide |
| Nylon (Polyamide) | Hydrophilic membranes widely used for aqueous and organic solvent filtration. Suitable for sterilization and clarification of buffers and nutrient media with low extractables. | Resistant to many solvents and alkaline solutions; pH 3–14 | 100 °C | Autoclaving at 121 °C or 134 °C, ethylene oxide |
| Polyethersulfone (PES) | Uniform pore structure with high mechanical stability; chemically inert. Excellent flow rates for critical filtration requiring high throughput and very low protein adsorption. | Resistant to some solvents and aggressive aqueous solutions; pH 1–13 | 200 °C | Autoclaving at 121 °C or 134 °C, gamma radiation (25 kGy), ethylene oxide |
| PTFE | Permanently hydrophobic; ideal for air and gas filtration. Extremely resistant to aggressive solvents and acids; suitable for liquid and gas samples. | Resistant to solvents, acids, and bases | 200 °C | Autoclaving at 121 °C or 134 °C, ethylene oxide |
